Before joining Kasper and Nottage, P.C., Courtney was Chief of Staff to former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones, Jr. He also served as the Senate President’s Chief Legal Counsel, the Ethics Officer for the Senate Democratic Caucus, and as the Freedom of Information Officer for the Illinois Senate. Prior to Courtney’s Senate work experience, he was staff counsel to the former Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, Michael J. Madigan.

Courtney has been a faculty member of the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education where he lectured on how to be an effective lobbyist. He also has delivered presentations on lobbying strategies at the University of Illinois-Springfield.

Earlier in his career, while in private law practice, Courtney was an associate in the Chicago law firm of William J. Harte, Ltd. There, his practice involved civil litigation at the trial and appellate levels in both state and federal courts.

Courtney had the privilege of serving as a member of the 2008 Democratic National Convention Rules Committee. An Ohio native, he’s a graduate of Indiana University School of Law, and Indiana State University. A Glenview resident, he is a proud husband and father of two daughters and a son.
